The Role
Olam Cocoa is looking for a research agronomist to support our Plant Science program. As a research agronomist you will be responsible for developing and executing agronomy projects in West Africa, which deliver scalable solutions to improve the productivity of cocoa farms, their environmental impacts and the quality of cocoa delivered to Olam, in line with the Group’s sustainability strategy. You will provide assistance to Olam field agronomist, making recommendations on a range of technical issues and will support them in developing their technical skills. In this position you will be part of a cross-functional team, working in coordination with our technical, business and sustainability organizations. You will be expected to spend significant time in the field to ensure the successful planning and implementation of projects. 

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Plant Science, this function has the following responsibilities:

  • Manage agronomy research projects aiming at improving farm productivity in West Africa, in line with Olam’s plant science strategy, cocoa quality requirements and sustainability goals
  • Plan and put in place necessary equipment and research infrastructure to support the projects
  • Provide technical assistance to field agronomists, on the basis of solid technical and scientific information, enabling knowledge building and decision making
  • Support the sharing of knowledge, lessons learnt and best practices across origins, programmes, related platforms and central CRS functions
  • Collaborate with relevant external public and private agricultural and research institutions to advance the agronomy program and present project results in internal and external meetings

Requirements
To be successful in this role the ideal candidate must have/be:

  • A graduate degree in agronomy or equivalent
  • At least 3 years of experience developing agronomy research on tropical crops, a least partly on cocoa, including managing trials in producing countries and publishing results
  • Significant experience in experimental design and the collection and analysis of complex data
  • Strong leadership skills and some experience in team management
  • Strategically minded, capable to integrate inputs from multiple stakeholders and experts
  • Result oriented and hands-on, comfortable spending significant time in the field
  • Flexible and able to mobilize and work with cross-functional teams
  • Puts strong emphasis on scientific integrity and on transparency
  • Strong ability to influence and work with internal and external stakeholders, in a multicultural environment
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Fluent in English and French, Spanish desirable

Location
As a research agronomist you will be affiliated with our plant science organization based in Koog aan de Zaan near Amsterdam. The successful applicant will be based in Côte d’Ivoire, after and introduction period of approximately 6 months in Koog aan de Zaan, the Netherlands.
